The G120P variable speed drive from Siemens is ideal for the efficient control of air and liquid media in typical commercial and residential HVAC systems. Substantial energy savings

HVAC systems are designed to cover maximum loads. However, to maintain room comfort at the desired level, in 85 % of all cases the amount of energy required is lower than the designed load. This is where variable speed drives prove their value: Allowing various pumps and fans within the system to run at a speed appropriate for the actual demand reduces energy consumption by up to 60 %. This translates into a significant reduction in operating costs.

So installing a G120P variable speed drive will amortize shortly by saving on energy costs alone. However, a variable speed drive also lowers maintenance costs. As we aim to reach the highest energy classes A and B with all our building automation products, the G120P variable speed drive is no exception and provides important prerequisites for energy class A according to EN 15232.

 

Cost savings due to minimized harmonics

Every motor in an HVAC system causes harmonic distortions in the power supply system when switched on or off. To counter this, Siemens developed the Low Harmonic Technology. This technology reduces harmonic currents directly on the AC line, making extra components such as external chokes or filters a thing of the past. The Low Harmonic Technology has a real power factor of close to 1, so you experience minimal apparent power.

Less wear and tear

Intelligent controls help you save energy and extend your devices’ service life. The ECO mode, for example, automatically optimizes the motor's power usage to suit the load. If the motor runs at mains frequency for a preselected period of time, the G120P changes to bypass mode and switches off. When the motor needs to run below the mains frequency, the drive automatically switches on again. The soft starts and stops, as well as the minimized mains harmonics, reduce motor wear, extending the service life of pumps and fans. And because the G120P prevents torque and load surges, it helps protect the entire system, and limits repair and maintenance costs. Last, but not least, the achieved efficiency of 98 % and the energy savings mean that the G120P amortizes in just a couple of months. This makes G120P a sound investment choice.

 

Modular and flexible design

The G120P variable speed drive consists of a control unit, a power module and an operator panel or blanking cover. Therefore, customers pay for what they really need, as for instance only one operator panel is needed to parameterize several variable speed drives. What is more, the modular design allows for a reduced number of spares, and in case of a component failure only the defective component needs to be replaced. If you exchange a power module, you don’t even need to reparameterize. So modular design actually means increased service flexibility, reduced costs and less waste of resources.


Demand-controlled, safe pump and fan operation

Tailored to the needs of pump installations and ventilation plants, the G120P variable speed drive supports optimum operation. The drives ensure that supply and exhaust fans and pumps are operating according to actual demand. In addition, the G120P keeps you on the safe side with intelligent controls. In pump applications, for instance, the G120P can detect a variety of events, such as a pump being blocked or running dry, an overloaded motor or the pump running outside the characteristic curve. In ventilation plants, the G120P can detect a failed belt, an overloaded motor, a blocked fan or a worn out bearing. In each of these potentially dangerous scenarios, the G120P protects your plant – either by triggering an alarm, lowering the motor’s speed, switching it off, or performing a programmed action.
